How is it like to learn Chinese martial arts and to learn it from a non Chinese master?
Chinatownology takes to Mr. Derick Chan Liang Chai, a Tsinoy (Chinese Filipino) who lives in Manila Chinatown. Michael is 17 years old (2008) and has been learning Chinese martial arts from his non Chinese master Sifo Frank Bolte.
When did you start learning martial arts here?
Since December 2007
What made you interested in Chinese martial arts?
Well.. at first it was for my health , being over weight and all , but the idea of being able to defend myself or other people motivated me even more.
How did you come to know of the school?
Through youtube
What were your expectations when you decide to sign up?
Well.. I just wanted to become healthy and learn this unique style of self defense.
How did you imagine the lessons to be and what did you think you can get out of it?
Like all martial arts I knew it was going to be a bit difficult , but I knew I would be able to get the experience and lessons that would help me protect myself and others.
How does it feel to learn Chinese martial arts from a German sifu?
Well.. Its not that different from learning from a Chinese guy, because its still the same martial art as it was passed down to him
Have martial arts training shaped you in other ways?
Yes, because through my training I have learned honor and discipline and self confidence.
