Although the songs are in Hakka, the audiences included members of other Chinese dialect groups and even overseas audiences. In fact, the Hakka songs caught the attention of a group of tourists passing by the clan association and attracted them to watch the performance.
The performance lasted for about two hours and ended with a spread of traditional Hakka food; another opportunity for everyone to interact and mingle while enjoying their traditional Hakka dishes.
In many ways, the session of Hakka folk songs is more than just singing of folk songs. The Hakka Folk songs expressed social aspirations as well as Hakka cultural identity. For the Hakka audiences, it was an opportunity to get together, enjoy familiar folk songs and to mingle over traditional Hakka food. For the non Hakka audiences, it was an opportunity to explore and to experience Hakka culture. Finally, to the group of tourist who walked in to enjoy the performance, it was an authentic cultural experience that is what traveling is all about.
